What is harmful to geomagnetic storms

The US space agency NASA fears that a geomagnetic storm could hit Earth on the night of October 30. This is thought to be due to the release of millions of tons of ionized gas from the sun last Thursday. Such storms do not harm people, but can affect communication infrastructure. This time, however, the experts are not expecting such a big loss.

The US space agency NASA says the storm could affect Earth’s GPS signals, satellite-dependent communications and power grids. With that, the aurora (polar light) may be visible in the Hudson Valley in New York, USA, under the influence of geomagnetic activity.

What is a geomagnetic storm

Intense solar energy exchange between the sun and the earth’s atmosphere is said to be, but it creates a big barrier in the magnetosphere, the last layer of the earth’s atmosphere. This interferes with the transmission of radio waves.

Classification of Solar Flare or Solar Flame Key

Strong radioactive radiation from the sun is called solar flare. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory found that the X1 class flame was emitted on October 26, 2021. NASA refers to the ‘X’ class in the case of the most intense solar flares. The number that accompanies it refers to the intensity. For example, X2 and X3 are twice and three times more powerful than X1, respectively.

An analysis by the US Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) shows that solar flares emanate from the sun at a speed of 963 kilometers per second. According to him, it is expected that the effect will reach the earth on Saturday night, which may be effective the next day.

The solar flare on October 26 caused a ‘radio blackout’, which could affect some high-level radio broadcasts and low-wave navigation systems.

According to a report by Spaceweather.com, the origin of this year’s solar flare is from the solar stigma called ‘AR28’, which is currently facing the middle of the sun and towards the earth. The spot on the surface of the sun is the sunspot.

The effects of geomagnetic storms

Harmful radioactive particles from solar flares cannot penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere and harm humans. However, the level of the atmosphere at which GPS and communication waves flow hit the place.

When this intense solar flare hits the Earth directly, it can be accompanied by solar particles, known as ‘coronal mass ejection’. According to the US Space Weather Prediction Center, signs of coronal month ejection are also seen with the solar flare of class X21 on October 26, 2021. However, the SWPC said in a statement that the impact of this solar storm is expected to be minimal.

Auroras can be seen in almost all the hemispheres when a solar storm hits the Earth’s magnetic field. In the northern hemisphere, it is called the Northern Lights. The aurora looks a lot like colored ribbons.

According to the Hindustan Times, this year’s solar storm in five stages is of ‘G3’ stage, if it is less than this, it would be a cause of fear for the electricity grid operators.
