غُفۡرَانَکَ رَبَّنَا وَ اِلَیۡکَ الۡمَصِیۡرُ ﴿۲۸۵

Meaning of verse 285

The Messenger believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and so did the believers. Everyone believes in Allah, His angels, His books and His messengers. We make no distinction between any of His Messengers. And they say: We have heard and accepted. O our Lord! I seek Your forgiveness and refuge in You.

Surah Baqarah – Last two verses — two verses: 286

Meaning of verse 286

Allah does not impose on anyone a responsibility beyond his ability [1]. His is the reward of what he earns good, and his reward of what he earns evil. O our Lord! You will not catch us if we forget or make a mistake. O our Lord! Do not burden us as you burdened those before us. O our Lord! You don’t make us carry anything we can’t afford. And you forgive our sins, forgive us, have mercy on us, you are our protector. So help us against the disbelievers [2]. ‘

Surah Baqarah – Last two verses and Tafseer

[1] It was said in the previous verse that whatever is in your hearts, whether you reveal it or keep it secret, Allah Ta’ala will take account of it from you. The real purpose of the verse was that Allah will take account of what you do voluntarily. It did not include inadvertent malice and mischief. But the language of the verse was outwardly comprehensive.

This meant that unintended ideas would also be taken into account. Hearing this verse, the Companions became restless and asked the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, O Messenger of Allah! Until now we thought that only our intentional actions would count. The involuntary imaginations that come to mind will not count. But by this verse it is known that every imagination will be counted.

It seems extremely difficult to get rid of the punishment. The Holy Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, knew the exact purpose of the verse, but in view of the extensiveness of the words used in the said verse, he did not think it appropriate to say anything on his part, rather he waited for revelation.

He enjoined upon the Companions that whatever command comes from Allah, be it easy or difficult, the duty of the believer is to accept it. The Companions acted according to the instructions of the Holy Prophet; However, they had the suspicion that it was very difficult to survive involuntary imaginations and negative thoughts. In view of this incident, Allah Ta’ala first praises the obedience of Muslims and in a special manner, dispels that doubt by saying, Allah Ta’ala does not order anyone to do anything beyond his ability.

Therefore, those imaginations and evil thoughts that arise in the heart involuntarily, and then do not turn them into action, are forgivable to Allah Ta’ala. Only those actions that are done will be counted. As a result of this explanation described in the Qur’an, the emotional anxiety of the Companions was removed. [Musnad Ahmad: 2/412, 1/332: Muslim: 125]

Then Allah Ta’ala taught Muslims a special supplication. So that the method of asking for forgiveness after doing something wrong has been taught and it has been specifically asked to pray for this Ummah so that the punishment like the previous Ummah does not come upon this Ummah.

[2] The two verses in question are the last verses of Surah Baqarah. The special virtues of these two verses are described in authentic hadiths. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: If someone recites two of these verses at night, it is sufficient for him. [Bukhari: 4008, 5008, Muslim: 808] That is, enough to be free from danger and various types of evil.

Regarding the virtues of these two verses, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever recites these two verses at night, this is sufficient for him.”

When these Surah Baqarah – Last two verses were revealed?

In Sahih Muslim, it is described about these two verses that, “These two verses were given to the Prophet (PBUH) in the sky with the five times prayer on the night of Miraj.”

Narrated by Zubayr Ibn Nufayr (RA). Rasulullah (SAW) said, ‘Allah has concluded Surah Al-Baqarah with two verses which have been bestowed upon me from the treasury beneath the Throne of Allah. So you will learn these verses. will teach your wives also. Because these verses are a mercy, a means of gaining nearness (to Allah) and a supplication for the welfare of (all the deen of the world).’ [Mishkat al-Masabih: 2173]

On the authority of Badri Sahabi Abu Mas’ud (RA). Rasulullah (SAW) said, ‘There are two verses at the end of Surah Baqarah, for the person who recites two verses at night, these two verses are sufficient. That is, the right to recite the Qur’an Majeed at night, at least reciting the last two verses of Surah Baqarah is enough for him.’ [Sahih Bukhari: 4008]

Hazrat Ali (RA) said, “In my opinion, whoever has a little intelligence, he will not go to sleep without reciting these two verses.”

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud (RA) narrates that Rasulullah (SAW) said, ‘When I was taken to Sidratul Muntaha, three things were given in charity. 1. Five times prayer, 2. The last two verses of Surah Baqarah, 3. For those who do not commit shirk among this Ummah, the poets are the good news that their sins will be forgiven.’ [Muslim, Tafsir Majhari]
